Summary Case Study:
Data Protection Store - Vantaa, Finland
Key Data:
• Project value £1.1 million scheme
• Mobile Shelving, over two levels, to store 2 million Data Protection Digital Linear Tapes
• Steel Structure c/w with Fire Rated Insulated Panel enclosure
• Close Control A/C Unit
• Climate control to asset chambers to maintain 18°C +/-1°C
• Fresh air ventilation throughout
• Gas Suppression System designed to NFPA2001 and Aspirating Smoke Detection System
• Lighting control system to save on energy
• Security system extensions for CCTV, intruder alarm and access control
The Scheme:
The scheme involved the creation of a fully compliant OSDP Fire-Rated Enclosure suitable for storing 1,980,000 data protection tapes on a mobile racking system with hand wheel drivers and anti-tip control. The area shown in the photograph above-left, was originally a section of a warehouse originally used by the client to store material due for destruction. This area was cleared to make space to create tape storage for a new client; a world leader in digital technology. To maximise storage space, a steel mezzanine structure was constructed to accommodate a two-level fire-rated tape storage enclosure (shown top left). To erect the steel mezzanine, thefloor had to be levelled and reinforced concrete applied. The base plates had to be enlarged to support the weight of the steel due to the composition of the floor slab beneath the new concrete layer. In addition, the fire-rated enclosure was equipped with an aspirating smoke detection system combined with gaseous fire suppression. Close control air conditioning was installed to maintain the correct temperature for tape storage and security systems were installed together with electrical power and lighting.
Our Role:
The company produced detailed and fully co-ordinated designs for the scheme including the mobile shelving system, lighting and small power provision, close control air conditioning system, aspirating smoke detection, gaseous suppression systems and all fire system interfaces so that the various elements act as a single composite system. The company also project managed the construction process, including structural consultant, contractor appointments and approvals plus too the cost management of the full scheme and client reporting. From our site offices the overall construction process was managed including co-ordination of construction sequencing, site safety, delivery and building code compliance. The challenges involved with this scheme were a demanding project construction programme; the structure of the floor slab, secure environment and working in a multi-level construction environment safely. The scheme was completed successfully and on budget, access for our client’s local business team was achieved on programme.
