Fire Protection Systems’ Design
& Co-ordination with MEP Services.

Key Data:

·       Location on the South Bank, London
·       Project value confidential
·       Dates of project from 2011 to 2016

The Scheme:

The project consisted of three phases of the National Theatre Masterplant is the renovation of a number of key areas of this iconic 1960’s brutalist period building. The works included in the project can be divided into three main areas for consideration, as follows:

1.     “Workshops and New Production Buildings” includes the construction of a new paint frame, extension of the basement to include mechanical and electrical workshops, sound studio and waste storage areas in addition to the extensive refurbishment of the existing workshop areas.

2.     “Dorfman Theatre and Clore Learning Centre” includes the comprehensive refurbishment of the Dorfman Theatre (formerly the Cottesloe Theatre) and creation of new Clore Learning Centre activity spaces.

3.     “North East Corner” includes changes to the stage door and the creation of new ancillary areas in the basement.

Our Role:

Our role consisted of the responsibility for the design of all the fire protection systems for all three Phases of this development and integrate the new requirements into the existing fire protection system infrastructure. The new fire protection systems in this building were designed in accordance with BS EN Standards and all works required the approval of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) prior to works being carried out.

Challenges and Collaboration:

The biggest challenge we faced was to fully appreciate the complex logistical challenge associated with such a large scale development whilst maintaining a fully operation cultural building hosting numerous shows and events on a daily basis. The areas of the building in use had to have fully operational fire protection systems so phasing of the works and isolation of parts of the system were critical. We produced in excess of 150 drawings from our original concept to Tender Package issue, including specifications and full hydraulic calculations for each fire system.

Commitment to sustainability and the environment:

We deliver design solutions based on the cornerstone of sustainability, environmental integrity, economic viability and social well-being.
