Summary Case Study:

Heathrow Airport - London

Fire Protection Systems Design

Key Data:

• Provision of sprinkler system infrastructure throughout Terminal T1
• Upgrade of both central terminal area water pump stations so to be compliant with sprinkler design codes

The Scheme:

The scheme involved the provision of a new fire protection infrastructure to Terminal 1 Heathrow so to accommodate retail modules never envisaged under the original building Fire Strategy, enabling commercial activities to use previously restricted locations. As a subsequent exercise both the central terminal area water supply pumpstations were completely refurbished with new plant to facilitate a water supply suitable for fire protection use.

Our Role:

The role consisted of surveying, reporting and designing the whole sprinkler infrastructure throughout the ‘live’ Terminal 1 building, both landside and airside, and supervising the subsequent installation works to provide a fully compliant and certified arrangement upon completion. As a secondary exercise, the company surveyed and designed the full upgrade scheme to both central terminal area water supply pump stations, then supervised the installations works including testing and commissioning.

Challenges and Collaboration:

Working within a ‘live’ building and within very strict construction protocol as required by Heathrow Airport, including maintaining a suitable water supply whilst taking 50% of the pumping capacity off-line for refurbishment. Also, finding pipework routes within the existing in-situ cast reinforced concrete structure for the new installation.

Commitment to sustainability and the environment:

The company deliver design solutions based on the cornerstone of sustainability, environmental integrity, economic viability and social well-being.
